Photoshop 2026 launched with rough edges. Startup crashes, RAW file hangs, Creative Cloud refusing to update. Here is what is actually working.

Quick Fix

Update Visual C++ Redistributables, then the Camera Raw plugin. Those two steps clear the majority of launch crashes and RAW import freezes on Windows 11.

  1. Install the latest Visual C++ Redistributable (x64 and x86) from Microsoft's VC++ Redistributable page.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Open Creative Cloud Desktop, find Photoshop, and update the Camera Raw plugin specifically.
  4. Launch Photoshop.

What Causes This

Photoshop 2026 (27.4.x) changed how it allocates GPU memory and rebuilt the Camera Raw decode pipeline. On Windows 11 the release conflicts with outdated Visual C++ 2015 to 2022 runtimes and with Nvidia driver branches below 566.x. Adobe has acknowledged both issues and is shipping point releases. The four fixes below knock out the remaining reports.

If Photoshop Still Crashes

Fix 1: Reset Preferences

Old preference files carried over from Photoshop 2025 break the new app.

  1. Hold Alt + Ctrl + Shift while launching Photoshop.
  2. A dialog asks to delete the settings file. Click Yes.
  3. Re-launch Photoshop clean.

Fix 2: Disable the GPU

For freezes after a few minutes of work or corrupted previews:

  1. Open Edit > Preferences > Performance.
  2. Uncheck Use Graphics Processor.
  3. Restart Photoshop.

This is a workaround while Adobe ships the driver fix. See Adobe's Photoshop GPU troubleshooting guide for supported driver versions.

Fix 3: Run the Creative Cloud Cleaner

Creative Cloud stuck updating or Photoshop refusing to install cleanly calls for the Cleaner Tool.

  1. Download the Cleaner Tool from Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool page.
  2. Run it as administrator.
  3. Choose Fix Creative Cloud issues. Do not choose Remove All unless you want to wipe every CC app.
  4. Reinstall Creative Cloud, then Photoshop.

Fix 4: Check Adobe Status

If fixes are not sticking, check Adobe's status page for an active backend incident before digging deeper into logs.

Prevent It From Happening Again

Keep VC++ redistributables current in your patching tool, pin Nvidia drivers to the Studio branch for creative workstations, and let Camera Raw update on its own release cadence instead of deferring. Creative Cloud's auto-update checkbox should stay on for Photoshop specifically, even if you manage the rest of the suite manually.
