If you're still running QuickBooks Desktop 2023 or any older version, May 31, 2026 is not a soft deadline. On that date, Intuit cuts off payroll updates, bank feeds, security patches, and live support simultaneously. There's no grace period.

Which Versions Are Affected

QuickBooks Desktop 2023 and all versions older than that lose services on May 31. This covers:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2023
  • QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus 2023
  • QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise 23.0
  • Any version from 2022 or earlier

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 and 2025 subscribers are not affected by this cutoff.

What Stops Working on June 1

After May 31, affected versions lose the following:

Payroll services (all tiers):

  • Payroll tax table updates stop downloading
  • Automatic payroll tax calculations stop
  • Payroll forms (W-2, 940, 941) become unavailable
  • For Assisted Payroll customers: Intuit stops filing tax forms on your behalf

Other connected services:

  • Online bank feeds and bank reconciliation sync disconnect
  • QuickBooks Desktop Payments processing stops
  • Live technical support ends

Security:

  • No more security patches for the software

The software itself doesn't disappear, but running it after June 1 means manual tax calculations, disconnected bank data, and no safety net if something breaks.

Why Payroll Failures Are Spiking Now

Payroll tax table downloads fail before the official cutoff date when Intuit starts winding down backend services. If you've seen errors like "Payroll Update Failed" or update timeouts in the last two weeks, that's why. The issue gets worse as the deadline closes in.

Your Migration Options

Intuit is pushing two paths:

QuickBooks Online: Fully cloud-based. Your data migrates via the built-in migration wizard. Monthly subscription, no local install. Main trade-off: the interface is different and some Desktop-specific features don't have direct equivalents.

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 or 2025 subscription: Keeps the Desktop experience. Annual subscription required. Payroll continues. If you depend on Desktop-specific workflows, this is usually the easier transition.

Before migrating, back up your company file. Go to File, then Back Up Company, then Create Local Backup. Keep that file somewhere off the machine before you do anything else.

Steps to Check Your Version

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop
  2. Press F2 or go to Help, then Product Information
  3. Look for the "Version" and "Release" fields

If your version year is 2023 or earlier, you need to act before May 31.
