You search for an item in your QuickBooks inventory list and the program crashes with an Unrecoverable Error (1407256492 30058). This error occurs when using the "Look For" search box in the Inventory Item List, causing QuickBooks to close.

The Fix

Create a backup first: File > Create Backup. Then, work through these methods in order.

Method 1: Test with a Sample File

This determines if the problem is with your company file or the QuickBooks installation.

1. Close QuickBooks.

2. Reopen QuickBooks while holding the Ctrl key until the "No Company Open" window appears.

3. Select Open a sample file.

4. In the sample company, go to Inventory > Item List and try the "Look For" search box.

  • If the sample file does NOT crash: Your company file is likely damaged. Proceed to Method 3.
  • If the sample file also crashes: The issue is with your QuickBooks installation. Proceed to Method 2.

Method 2: Use QuickBooks Tool Hub

1. Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit's official website.

2. Run the Tool Hub and go to the Program Problems tab.

3. Click Quick Fix my Program. Follow the prompts.

4. If the error persists, go to the Installation Issues tab and run the QuickBooks Program Diagnostic Tool.

5. Restart your computer and test the inventory search again.

Method 3: Copy Company File to a New Folder

This resolves issues caused by a damaged folder path.

1. Create a new folder on your desktop named QBTEST.

2. Navigate to your current company file location (commonly C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files).

3. Copy your .QBW file and paste it into the new QBTEST folder.

4. Open QuickBooks and open the company file from the QBTEST location. Test the search.

Method 4: Verify and Rebuild Data

1. Open your company file.

2. Go to File > Utilities > Verify Data. Note any errors.

3. If errors are found, go to File > Utilities > Rebuild Data. Create a backup when prompted.

4. After the rebuild, test the inventory search.

Method 5: Stop QBCFMonitorService on Workstations (Multi-User Only)

This service should only run on the host computer.

1. On the affected workstation (not the server), press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

2. Locate QBCFMonitorService or QuickBooksDBXX (where XX is your version).

3. Right-click the service and select Stop. Set its Startup type to Manual.

4. Restart the workstation and test.

Method 6: Apply All Updates

1. In QuickBooks, go to Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop. Click Update Now.

2. Run Windows Update to install all system updates.

3. Restart your computer and test again.

Verify

A successful fix allows you to use the "Look For" search box without a crash. If all fixes fail, avoid the search box. Use the Item List scroll bar or run inventory reports (Reports > Inventory > Inventory Valuation Summary) to find items.
