You see the error "We can't connect you" with code 0xCAA80000 in Microsoft Teams, Outlook, or during Microsoft 365 activation. This connectivity block prevents access to Microsoft services.
The Fix
Follow these steps in order. Restart your computer and test the application after each step before proceeding.
1. Enable TLS 1.2 Protocol
Outdated security protocols block the connection.
1. Press Windows + R, type inetcpl.cpl, and press Enter.
2. Navigate to the Advanced tab.
3. Under the Security section, ensure Use TLS 1.2 is checked.
4. Click Apply, then OK, and restart your PC.
If That Doesn't Work:
2. Repair or Reset the Affected Application
For Microsoft Teams or Office apps, use the built-in repair.
1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
2. Find the app (e.g., Microsoft Teams), click the three dots, and select Advanced options.
3. First, click Repair. Wait for completion.
4. If the error persists, return and click Reset. This clears app data, so you will need to sign in again.
If That Doesn't Work:
3. Clear Authentication Cache and Data
Corrupted local cache can cause persistent authentication errors.
- Clear Teams Cache: Press Windows + R, type
%AppData%\Microsoft\Teams, and delete the folders:blob_storage,Cache,databases,GPUCache,IndexedDB,Local Storage, andtmp. - Delete TokenBindingKeys: Press Windows + R, type
%LocalAppData%\Packages, and press Enter. Navigate toMicrosoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy\AC\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeysand delete the TokenBindingKeys folder. If the path doesn't exist, delete the entireMicrosoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewyfolder.
If That Doesn't Work:
4. Reset Internet Explorer Settings & Update Windows
Legacy IE settings can interfere with modern authentication.
1. Press Windows + R, type inetcpl.cpl, and go to the Advanced tab.
2. Click Reset, check Delete personal settings, and click Reset.
3. Then, run Windows Update to install all latest patches. Restart.
If That Doesn't Work (Corporate Environments):
5. Check Proxy, Firewall, and Services
Network configuration or stopped services can be the cause.
- Proxy: Run Command Prompt as Administrator. Check settings with
netsh winhttp show proxy. If a proxy is configured incorrectly, set it withnetsh winhttp set proxy <proxy:port>or reset it withnetsh winhttp reset proxy. - Firewall: Ensure your firewall allows traffic to the
MSOIDCRLendpoint. - Services: Ensure these services are running: Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, Windows Event Log. Start them via
services.mscor PowerShell (Admin):
Get-Service -Name "NcdAutoSetup", "NlaSvc", "EventLog" | Start-ServiceVerify
A successful fix will allow you to sign in without the 0xCAA80000 error. For activation, open any Office app (Word, Excel) and go to File > Account. It should show "Product Activated." In Teams or Outlook, you should remain connected without prompts. In corporate settings, if web versions work but desktop apps fail, investigate ADFS or Group Policy restrictions with your domain administrator.
