Microsoft 365 users report that desktop apps like Word or Excel will not open. When you try to start these programs, they may do nothing. Sometimes the loading screen appears for a second and then closes without an error code. This issue mainly affects Microsoft 365 Personal and Enterprise versions on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The Problem
Reports show that Word, Excel, and PowerPoint fail during startup. Users typically describe the experience like this:
"No specific error message; Word, Excel, or PowerPoint just will not open or launch."
This may also appear as a brief splash screen that closes immediately, or the app process appearing in Task Manager but never showing a window.
Why Microsoft 365 Apps Won't Open
Several issues can stop these apps from working. Updates that get interrupted or disk errors can damage the installation files. Third-party plugins for Word or Excel often do not update at the same time as Microsoft 365. This causes the app to crash when it tries to load the add-in. Additionally, a background update may fail to register certain DLL files. This stops the app from starting entirely.
If your issue is specifically with activation rather than launching, see our guide to fix Microsoft 365 activation errors.
For general Windows issues that might stop your software from working, see our Windows troubleshooting guides.
Step 1: Repair the Microsoft 365 Installation
Try the built-in repair tool first. It scans the installation and replaces missing or damaged files.
- Right-click the Start button and select Apps and Features (or Installed Apps on Windows 11).
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
- Click the three dots and choose Modify.
- Select Quick Repair first. This is fast. It fixes most path issues without an internet connection.
- If that does not work, choose Online Repair. This is more thorough and acts like a fresh install.
- Follow the prompts and restart your computer when the process finishes.
Step 2: Launch Apps in Safe Mode
If the repair fails, a bad add-in is likely the problem. Safe Mode runs the apps without any plugins or custom templates.
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box.
- Type the command for the app you are troubleshooting:
- For Word:
winword.exe /safe - For Excel:
excel.exe /safe - For PowerPoint:
powerpnt.exe /safe
- For Word:
- Press Enter. If the app opens, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set "Manage" to COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Uncheck every item and restart the app normally. You can turn them back on one at a time to find which one causes the crash.
Step 3: Force a Microsoft 365 Update
Even if the app will not stay open, you can often trigger an update through Windows Settings or by using an app that still works.
- Open any Office app that functions correctly, like OneNote.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- Check that Windows Update is current. Microsoft often includes Office patches in Windows updates. If Windows Update itself is giving you trouble, see our guide to fix Windows Update errors.
Step 4: Use the Web Version as a Workaround
If you are on a deadline and the desktop apps still will not work, use the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Go to office.com and sign in with your Microsoft 365 account.
- Select Word, Excel, or PowerPoint from the sidebar.
- Upload your file to OneDrive to keep working. This helps you stay productive while you fix the desktop apps or contact our team for hands-on help.
